Aaah of course GRRM is tripping all over himself to suck Campbell’s desiccated dead dick at the Hugos. Of course he is.

And like to be clear my problem with Campbell is not just that he was a vicious bigot (which he was). It’s also that I do honestly believe his influence made English-language SFF worse than if he had never existed.

Like… this dude was shit and his protégés were shit and his ~vision for the genre was shit and has produced shit for the last like sixty years.

@alis He choked out so many amazing writers and deliberately did his best to homogenize scifi for decades.

@prettyarbitrary One of the things I think has been kind of interesting has been watching the explosive popularity of things like anime/manga, comics, and other SF-but-not-by-Campbell’s-rules media. Like, whether people realise it or not it is a pretty resounding rejection of his vision for what science fiction “is”.

@alis Oh my god he would have lost his tiny mind if he had seen. I love thinking about it. He chose pretty much the most boring, repetitive concept of what scifi could be to begin with.

worldcon 🧂

@prettyarbitrary @alis I don't think I've ever read Campbell. Can I safely assume he's from the school of mid-century scifi peopled by cardboard women and Firm-Jawed Masculine Heroes and like, a spaceship thrown in so we'd know it was scifi?

worldcon 🧂

@lindentreeisle @prettyarbitrary He was the dude who *invented* that... or rather enforced it.

@alis @prettyarbitrary Fucking ew. So he IS everything I hate about the genre, good to know. 🤮
