stg Pelosi is like the teacher making a big show of tapping her foot being all like "stop that right now! don't make me come in there!" who has absolutely no clue what to do if her threats don't work.

uspol

Like, I know she thinks she's being strategic/playing realpolitik, doesn't want to have another failed impeachment attempt on her hands, etc. etc.

But, like... the ~optics of this sort of fussy hand-wringing is exactly why we're here in the first place! Maybe *everyone* needs to be doing somoe of the ol' soul searching about How We Got Here, not just the GOP, y'know?

uspol

Like, just to say the quiet part out loud for a moment, the entire current MAGAmuffin playbook on ~election doubts~ isn't something they invented. They aren't smart enough for that; they lifted it wholesale from the last four years of the liberal establishment's impotent bleatings about Russian interference in 2016. There are significant elements (in both parties) that treat this sort of stuff as a cynical game.

uspol

I really do think people underestimate how much of the nudge-nudge-wink-wink GOPer "playing along" with Trump's fraud nonsense is petty payback against Democrats for the Russia stuff. The fact that it's not real... well. That's never stopped the GOP in the past, has it? They're also still trying to get revenge for Watergate for freak's sake (ref. e.g. Benghazi).

Tl;dr so much of the gerontocratic Washington political class is just... completely divorced from the Really Real World. And, like. I loathe bothsidesism and the GOP is definitely the more corrosive party overall. But, in this particular case, the Dems are just as guilt of aiding and abetting all this nonsense.

PELOSI: 25th Amendment, Mike.

PENCE: How about I promise to come to Joe's shindig instead?

... it's almost like this is exactly the sort of shit I'm talking about!

uspol

@alis sometimes I just wonder, like...what if the Dems stopped trying to play nicey nice? Like not even just tearing out Ted Cruz's heart and showing it to him, couldn't we just acknowledge reality a little? Maybe there should have been more references to Trump as "racist orange fucknut Donald Trump."

I know that's not exactly what you're talking about but I'm SO TIRED of Dems pretending everything is just business as usual when it's not.

uspol

@lindentreeisle It's definitely related; the cult of civility politics.

It's basically a side effect of seeing politics as a kind of a game; it's more important to be seen "taking the high road" while playing the game than it is, well. Realize it's not actually a game at all.

uspol

@alis yeah. I mean sometimes you have to take the high road: you can't shoot protestors just bc they're assholes as one relevant example, there are ethics you have to maintain. But taking the high road with civility is a zero sum game; if Dems had any fucking sense they would have flipped the table in 2017, bc it was immediately obvious Trump could be as uncivil as he wanted without penalty and we weren't going to get any brownie points for following the rules he ignores.
