Neoguri tastes like pain but I keep coming back to it. Is this what being a bottom is like

@alpine_thistle Neoguri, as in the instant noodle? Do you mean that it's spicy?

food, lewd, only partially a joke

@lj_writes yeah. My brain says yes but my mouth says stop

food, lewd, only partially a joke

@alpine_thistle I never thought of Neoguri as spicy, tbh. You'd drop dead if you tried one of the Buldak noodles, which is too much even for many Koreans (incl. very much me)

@lj_writes hmm now I feel like have to give it a try. The big Asian supermarket here has like, multiple walls of different instant noodles... 🤔

I like spicy food, but it makes my face sweat and my nose run and eventually I hit a “can’t take another bite” wall if it’s spicy enough.

@alpine_thistle This is my favorite thing about my white friends, how much they suffer with spicy food 😂 it's evil of me but I'm bad at spice by Korean standards and it gives me a sense of undeserved superiority 🥺

food, lewd, only partially a joke

@lj_writes it’s a good kind of suffering though lol! And my spice tolerance is pretty high by white people standards (Sarah’s is even higher).

@alpine_thistle Agreed, and I've definitely fallen off the "challenging myself with spice" wagon in my old age. Maybe I should be having a Buldak noodle myself...

@lj_writes lol so my dad did his LDS mission in Koreatown, LA in the late 80s. He told me that one time he asked a guy in the congregation something like “so you know how there’s some things about Korean food that white people have a hard time with? Is there anything about white people food that Koreans have a hard time with?”

And the guy goes “😷 CHEESE 😖”

food, lewd, only partially a joke

@alpine_thistle Look, I get like sliced cheese, mozzarella cheese, and I like a Camembert from time to time, but some of your cheeses smell like feet and should never have been approved for human consumption 😡

I'm also reminded of this essay: eater.com/2015/7/22/9011329/li

@lj_writes I fully agree (blue cheese is an abomination. what the fuck) but I love a nice sharp, funky, aged cheese otherwise 🤤

Also that was such a charming essay omg

food, lewd, only partially a joke

@alpine_thistle The essay was like a little time capsule for me, bringing home how much Americanized Korea became in the decades since the author immigrated. Things like beds and cheese are extremely mundane now, so it's kind of poignant to see how unfamiliar these things used to be. I also kept thinking, "Man, you'd have been in a MUCH better material position if you'd stayed put :/"
