Large scale political violence surrounding a contested election is not foriegn to US history. The Civil War began because the Southern slaveholding aristocracy refused to countenance an antislavery president, and seceded before he could be sworn in. The racist terrorist goons who stormed the capitol, are following in the legacy they so claim to be proud of, that of the Confederacy, which is to say a legacy of white supremacist treason in defiance of the vote.
@attackfish even more fittingly, one of the important balances that eased the tensions between the north and south before the american civil war was the senate balance between slave states and free states. the civil war was partially caused by the threat to that senate balance
with warnock and ossoff winning the senate and finally unseating mitch mcconnell, history seems to rhyme ever more strangely
