stg Pelosi is like the teacher making a big show of tapping her foot being all like "stop that right now! don't make me come in there!" who has absolutely no clue what to do if her threats don't work.

uspol

Like, I know she thinks she's being strategic/playing realpolitik, doesn't want to have another failed impeachment attempt on her hands, etc. etc.

But, like... the ~optics of this sort of fussy hand-wringing is exactly why we're here in the first place! Maybe *everyone* needs to be doing somoe of the ol' soul searching about How We Got Here, not just the GOP, y'know?

uspol

Like, just to say the quiet part out loud for a moment, the entire current MAGAmuffin playbook on ~election doubts~ isn't something they invented. They aren't smart enough for that; they lifted it wholesale from the last four years of the liberal establishment's impotent bleatings about Russian interference in 2016. There are significant elements (in both parties) that treat this sort of stuff as a cynical game.

uspol

I really do think people underestimate how much of the nudge-nudge-wink-wink GOPer "playing along" with Trump's fraud nonsense is petty payback against Democrats for the Russia stuff. The fact that it's not real... well. That's never stopped the GOP in the past, has it? They're also still trying to get revenge for Watergate for freak's sake (ref. e.g. Benghazi).

uspol

@alis Except Trump did collude with the Russian intelligence apparatus to influence the 2016 election. We have reams and reams of evidence. Investigating it and calling him out on it and trying to bring it to light does not make Democrats in any way responsible for this. Your logic here is, " If you investigate corruption and fraud where it actually happens, then you are partly to blame when people wrongly accuse you of corruption, because you reminded them it's a thing that exists."

uspol

@alis You claim to loathe bothsideism, and then call the Democrats equally responsible for aiding and abetting this. Make up your mind.

uspol

@alis Back in 2016, when it looked like Trump was losing, he claimed the election was rigged. Since Karl Rove, the Republicans have followed a pattern, do something terrible, then accuse the Democrats of doing that terrible thing. Trump has distilled this into its most blatant form. This tactic catches the Democrats in a bind. They can respond, and accuse the Republicans of what they have been doing, "No, you rigged the election," and leave many people thinking both sides are doing it...

uspol

@alis Or they can let the Republican attacks and malfeasance both pass without challenge. This tactic only works because the Republicans have decided to be bad actors and they know their opponents aren't. There is no way out of this bind unless one is willing to pull the same kind of corrosive shit.

uspol

@alis Ultimately, you know that, which is why you appear to be unable to make up your mind, should the Democrats shut ip if they don't have the power to do anything about their accusations, or should they somehow be more forceful?

I wish there were some way out of this bind without doing even worse damage to my country, but there isn't.

uspol

@alis And I wish that people would stop comparing Pelosi, who has been an extraordinarily effective Speaker of the House in trying times, to a nagging teacher or mother. It's an old misogynistic trope to compare a woman in power to these women who had power over is as children, to redomesticate them and diminish them, and while I don't think you.were being misogynistic knowingly, you were still trafficking in its tropes.

@alis There is a strong tendency in humans to want to assign blame for what frustrates us. But when looking at the Democratic response to Trump, it's important to ask, "is there anything else they could have done, and what consequences could those other acts have had," before claiming they are equally guilty as Republicans for aiding and abetting the rise of right wing racist terror.
