So Polygon ran an article about the fascist subtexts within Attack on Titan:
I never got into Titan, it's been years since I've been into anime. But as a Latinx person, as a first generation citizen and a child of immigrants, I'm especially sensitive and aware of what walls represent. Their context, their connotations, their symbolism. It's no mistake that this anime is centered around a walled society and an army of invaders.

Walls and barriers have been used throughout history to separate populations from each other during times of war. Germany was split between East and West by the Berlin Wall during the Cold War. The nation of Korea is still at war with eachother with the DMZ dividing the nation between North and South. And I don't have to remind anyone what this current administration's plans are to do with the border. You don't have a wall along nations unless you're at war.

I saw the first episode of Titan and found it to be militaristic at best. Given the rise of right-wing nationalism around the world, I'm not surprised at all that the series creator included fascistic undertones within his work. The idea of invaders breaching the walls of a civilization and young people recruited to stop the invasion being celebrated is incredibly retrograde. What's more disturbing to me is how popular this series is.
