Just watched #fruitsBasket to the end. So much crying. If it was on AO3 I wonder how many tags it would get. Mental abuse, child abuse, underage, supernatural, harm to minors, maybe beastiality, maybe incest.
I could never figure out how such a wholesome feeling #anime could have so much darkness in it.
I mean, how many people did Akito abuse, or sleep with? I feel like I can count the good parents on one hand.
And why didn't they use their vast resources to hire some therapists?
@Rozzychan I loved Fruits Basket
@Rozzychan do therapists even exist in Japan? I see them in American media, but I can’t recall ever running across one in anime or manga, which suggests at least that creators are unfamiliar with them or feel they’re too unusual to write into stories
@pcas
I found a couple of articles that suggest that there are very few therapists in Japan, and that even if they were available, many would not go to them because of the stigma. Mental illness is said to be thought of as more of a personality trait than something to be treated, and it is more difficult to get care than in the US or Europe.
I did, however, find a youtuber who is talking about mental illness in #anime Sounds cool.
